Rogov’s Guide to Israeli Wines, 2008

Published by under Wine Books

Customer Review: This is the bible for Israeli wines

Rogov's book is the bible for Israeli wines. Israeli wines were recently highlighted by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. He rated many wines at 90+. Rogov's book gives detailed tasting notes and vintage information, albeit his ratings are slightly inflated. But the taste of many of these wines are not. The big problems is that it is hard to find many of these wines in the US. But if you try hard, you can find most, except from the smallest boutique wineries.

Customer Review: Enthusiastically recommended for all wine enthusiasts

Its been within the last decade that Israel has achieved a justified fame and recognition for the quality of its wines. Now in a newly revised and updated fourth edition, "Rogov's Guide To Israeli Wines 2008" continues to bring addition to the wines of Israel by showcasing not only the more than 2,000 vintages (tasted, rated and described), but also more than 150 Israeli wineries. Enhanced for the wine connoisseur with a tasting chart, a detailed map of Israel's wine regions, and 500 new releases along with their critiques. "Rogov's Guide To Israeli Wines 2008" is enthusiastically recommended for all wine enthusiasts, and is a reliable reference guide for restauranteurs and retail wine sellers.

Lobel’s Meat and Wine: Great Recipes for Cooking and Pairing

Published by under Wine Books

When it comes to meat, the Lobel family of New York is recognized as the prime purveyor and authority. Whether it's beef, pork, lamb, poultry, or game, they know not only how to choose it, but also the very best ways to prepare each cut. Here they describe and integrate the flavors of wine and reveal which of its components are the most food-friendly. And then there are nearly 100 recipes. From the easy-to-prepare rib steaks, marinated in Pinot Noir, to the delicious surprise of a gratin of chicken and Gruy re cheese cooked in Bourgogne blanc, each recipe gives detailed wine notes and, where appropriate, butcher's notes and make-ahead tips. Lobel's Meat and Wine is a cut above.

Customer Review: A winner any public lending library will want

"Lobel's Meat and Wine: Great Recipes for Cooking and Pairing" comes from the Lobel family of New York, purveyors of meats. Their knowledge allows for more than just another meat cookbook: "Lobel's Meat and Wine" covers all the basics, ranging from if one should marinate before cooking meat, to understanding how salt affects meat flavorings, to what happens during browning. Additionally, this basic knowledge is accompanied with fail-safe, tested recipes paired with detailed wine notes . Add color photos throughout and you have a winner any public lending library will want and one which would grace any dedicated kitchen cook's personal reference collection.

Customer Review: Very nice

This is a very interesting book to read and play with, especially since there is such a dearth of books that advise on food / wine pairings beyond simple colors. This book not only recommends kinds of wines, but explains the why and how of it - additionally, most of the recipes - almost all of them - include wine as an ingredient.

This is a big book, and it can lay flat, which is also a plus. It's really a sort of hybrid cookbook, recipes along with advice and a crash course in wine.

Of course, it's all about cooking meat, so your results will be directly proportionate to the quality of the cut of meat that you use. Reading these recipes, it's obvious that a better cut will pay off in preparation.

I would have liked more pictures, though, as there are only about four or five per chapter, although they are full color and full page. I just like to see what i'm aiming for, and my girlfriend likes looking at good food photos too (her English isn't so good, so the pictures help even more). Still, it's a minor niggle compared to the quality of this oversized hardcover, and it is highly recommended for more serious kitchen cooks - I wouldn't recommend it for a straight up beginner, though.

The Bordeaux Betrayal: A Wine Country Mystery

Published by under Wine Books

Ellen Crosby's third tale of suspense set amid the vines of Virginia wine country involves a two-hundred-year-old bottle of Bordeaux that Thomas Jefferson may have purchased for George Washington and is turning out to be a wine to die for.

It has been a year since Lucie Montgomery took over running her family vineyard at the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. The Bordeaux Betrayal now sweeps her into a mystery that began more than two centuries ago in France and ends in murder not far from Montgomery Estate Vineyard.

When author and historian Valerie Beauvais turns up dead the night after a verbal brawl with a noted wine critic on the grounds of Mount Vernon, George Washington's home, Lucie is certain Valerie's death is related to something she knew concerning the authenticity of the priceless Washington Bordeaux.

As Lucie and her eccentric winemaker Quinn Santori bring in the last grapes of the season, Quinn's controversial past becomes intertwined with the murder and the rare wine, testing the bonds of their increasingly close relationship. New neighbors challenge Lucie for allowing a century-old hunting club to use her land for foxhunting; Mick Dunne, Lucie's ex-lover, comes back into her life; and her beloved French grandfather makes an unexpected visit that will rekindle painful memories some would prefer to forget.

As Lucie investigates the shadowy history of the Washington wine, she uncovers a web of deceit and betrayal and a long-forgotten scandal that affects not only the international wine world but her own as well

The World’s Greatest Wines

Published by under Wine Books

A superlative wine for every day of the year?is that so much to ask? As the French say, pas du tout. With The World?s Greatest Wines, two of the wine world?s most respected authorities, Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve, present a calendar?s worth of wines that, in their expert judgment, every wine lover will want to experience. Longtime editors of France?s top wine guide, La Revue du Vin de France, Bettane and Desseauve have an unsurpassed knowledge of their home nation?s wines. But here they broaden their sights, embracing an array of fine wines?red and white, sparkling and still, dry and sweet?from all over the globe. Every major kind of wine and wine-growing region is represented on the author?s meticulously chosen list?from the cabernets of California, to the malbecs of Argentina, to the sauvignon blancs of New Zealand, to the rieslings of Germany?s Mosel region.

Much more than just a catalog of producers and labels, the book contains a detailed profile of each of the wine estates selected, notes on the recent vintages the authors prefer, and a series of spectacular images of some of the world?s most renowned vineyards and wineries.

Customer Review: Potential

I thought the book had very interesting insights into the story of the "world's greatest wines" but stopped short of being a comprehensive guide. It succeeds however as a broad outline and is useful none-the-less.

Customer Review: If you know who Bettane is, you do not want this book

This first significant work by Michel Bettane to appear in any language in years is just a silly coffee-table book. The world's most thoughtful and thorough wine writer has apparently sold his name to a book of photographs with no serious content. Some of the featured wineries are oddly chosen and would seem to have been included for commercial reasons. Anyone who already owns a few wine books does not need this one.

A Companion to California Wine: An Encyclopedia of Wine and Winemaking from the Mission Period to the Present

Published by under Wine Books

California is the nation's great vineyard, supplying grapes for most of the wine produced in the United States. The state is home to more than 700 wineries, and California's premier wines are recognized throughout the world. But until now there has been no comprehensive guide to California wine and winemaking. Charles L. Sullivan's A Companion to California Wine admirably fills that gap--here is the reference work for consumers, wine writers, producers, and scholars.
Sullivan's encyclopedic handbook traces the Golden State's wine industry from its mission period and Gold Rush origins down to last year's planting and vintage statistics. All aspects of wine are included, and wine production from vine propagation to bottling is described in straightforward language. There are entries for some 750 wineries, both historical and contemporary; for more than 100 wine grape varieties, from Aleatico to Zinfandel; and for wine types from claret to vermouth--all given in a historical context.
In the book's foreword the doyen of wine writers, Hugh Johnson, tells of his own forty-year appreciation of California wine and its history. "Charles Sullivan's Companion," he adds, "will provide the grist for debate, speculation, and reminiscence from now on. With admirable dispassion he sets before us just what has happened in the plot so far."

Customer Review: Essential for the history of California wine

Bo Simmond's praise for this book can not be exaggerated; there is no better library of wine books in the United States. Sullivan himself has studied wine and its history in California for over 30 years. He has a clear and concise style, and his text is well documented and reliable.

Sullivan has contributed his California wine history database to winefiles.org. It contains over 30,000 citations to primary sources in California's wine history, including books, newspapers, trade journals and other periodicals.

In addition to A Companion to California Wine, Sullivan is the author of:

Napa Wine: A History from Mission Days to Present;

WINES AND WINEMAKERS OF THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS (Los Gatos: D. R. Bennion Trust, 1992);

Like Modern Edens: Winegrowing in Santa Clara Valley and Santa Cruz Mountains 1798-1981; and

Zinfandel: A History of a Grape and Its Wine (California Studies in Food and Culture, 10).

Sullivan continues to write about California wine, and has written over a hundred articles on the subject, which have been published in leading wine periodicals. A Companion is a great place to explore his work and California wine history in general.

Customer Review: A Delightful Companion

This lean volume is everything you'd want in a companion: Lively, intoxicating, and beautiful in appearance; her lean, supple prose swells provocatively beneath the sheer, black jacket that clings suggestively to this tight, curvaceaous body of work. But she is more than a sensual treat! Her wit, though not of the highest order, gives some delight as well and one would be proud to appear with this companion under one's arm even at a Mensa gathering. ....
