Customer Review: Tour Club of Italy does it again!

We generally like the work of Touring Club of Italy. This wine book is no exception. It won't give you a subjective list of great wines--there are plenty of books and magazines filled with this information. Instead, it gives you genuine INFORMATION like the location of the DOC and DOCG zones, the exact requirements of each along with suggested driving tours through all the wine zones big and small. If you want to know what grape is used to make Rosso Conero, how large the production area is, what the typical percentage of alcohol might be and how long it must be aged, this book is for you. Look elsewhere for information on trendy wineries and lists of "Top 100" and other subjective rankings. This book is a valuable resource in our library.

Customer Review: Enhanced with 167 maps and 99 detailed itineraries

The Italian Wine Guide is a delightful travel guide to the various regional wines and 325 wineries of Italy. Virtually every page of this comprehensive and detailed reference features colorful photographs, maps, lists of amazing facts, and much more. Fish into Wine: The Newfoundland Plantation in the Seventeenth Century (Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, Williamsburg, Virginia)

Published by under Wine Books

Combining innovative archaeological analysis with historical research, Peter E. Pope examines the way of life that developed in seventeenth-century Newfoundland, where settlement was sustained by seasonal migration to North America's oldest industry, the cod fishery.

The unregulated English settlements that grew up around the exchange of fish for wine served the fishery by catering to nascent consumer demand. The English Shore became a hub of transatlantic trade, linking Newfoundland with the Chesapeake and New England, England, southern Europe, and the Atlantic islands. Pope gives special attention to Ferryland, the proprietary colony founded by Sir George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, in 1621, but later taken over by the London merchant Sir David Kirke and his remarkable family. The saga of the Kirkes provides a narrative line connecting social and economic developments on the English Shore with metropolitan merchants, proprietary rivalries, and French competition.

Employing a rich variety of evidence to place the fisheries in the context of transatlantic commerce, Pope makes Newfoundland a fresh point of view for understanding the demographic, economic, and cultural history of the expanding North Atlantic world.

Customer Review: An Excellent Work in Newfoundland History

Peter Pope writes an excellent account of the Newfoundland Plantation in the seventeenth century. Notably, he details the prominent position that the island held in the trans-Atlantic trade during the same period. It's a wonderful and thorough revisionist account that shifts some focus from the more traditional and well documented trading centres of North America. Overall, a stellar analysis of Early Modern Newfoundland!

Wine Heritage: The Story of Italian-American Vintners

Published by under Wine Books

Foreword, Robert Mondavi Mondavi, Martini, Sebastiani, Gallo, Bargetto and Pirelli-Minetti. Who could deny the importance of Italians to the development of America's wine industry? It is little known that Italians have been planting vineyards and making wine in America since the early colonial days when Filio Mazzei was the vineyard consultant for Thomas Jefferson. Grapes were planted and nurtured in virtually every corner of America where Italians settled. Wine making was as sacrosanct as making bread or pasta. Wine is inseparable from the Italian culture and is loved and revered as the "holy blood of the grape." It is one of the secrets of the healthy Mediterranean life style now preached by health experts.

Here is the story of Italian immigrants whose descendants now dominate American wine making. How they struggled and endured. How they persisted in the face of Prohibition and facilitated legislation permitting home wine making of 200 gallons per family. The intrigue, the feuds, the love affairs and financial triumphs are all in this authenticated history from the earliest days of America to the new Italian/American wine makers such as Francis Ford Coola. 256 , 150 historic photos.

Customer Review: Wine and Winemakers

Dick Rosano is an Italian-American winemaker, and, thanks to his considerable talents as a writer, he is able to share both his love for his heritage and his love for the world of win in this delightful book. He traces the history of winemaking in the United States, giving credit where due and reveals some details hitherto unpublicized. A good read and a great gift for anyone who shares his heritage, a love of history, or a love of wine.

Customer Review: Great history of Italian-American Wine

Dick Rosano has written an in-depth account of one of the marvels of American wine: The influence that Italian-Americans have had on the development and history of the industry. Without this Italian influence, in culture and winemaking, American wine wouldn't be what it is today. And without this book, Americans wouldn't understand the impact that these families had on our winemaking culture over the last 300 years. It's a must if you want to understand the evolution of American wine.
