Customer Review: referred to it in between each winery stop on a 5 day vacation

this was a fantastic trip - the first time we toured an area specifically for wine tasting, and became comfortable stopping into wineries and interacting with those from the industry - the recommendations were fantastic and we lent this book to another couple who were also grateful for it's recommendations

Customer Review: Ready for wine tour of the Finger Lakes

As I prepare and pack in order to move to the Finger Lakes region of NY state, I enjoyed reading Wine Tour, which further reinforces my love of the area. I have visited a few wineries and look forward to my permanent residence and a greater dedication of exploring the wine industry there. The book is well organized, informative and has many beautiful photographs of the region and its wineries. It is must read before wine touring.

The Wine Lover’s Dessert Cookbook: Recipes and Pairings for the Perfect Glass of Wine

Published by under Wine Books

This gorgeous book is actually two in one: page after page of recipes for fabulous desserts combined with all the information anyone will need on choosing a dessert wine. Peach Tarte Tatin with an intensely flavored ice wine brings out the fruit's summery spirit in this French favorite. A full-bodied vintage port with berry flavors provides the perfect foil to an amazingly decadent Chocolate Souffl Roulade for a little piece of heaven. A user-friendly chart cross-references wine types against typical dessert flavors for quick and easy matching advice. Add to that mouthwatering photographs of the recipes and anyone can discover a whole new world of sweet wines and the desserts that love them.

Customer Review: Lovely cookbook!

This is a notch up from the usual Chronicle Book publication! I say this because I often find that this publisher puts out cookbooks that are all "beautiful pictures" and very little information. It is clear that the authors worked really hard to deliver good information and content and tips - this book isn't just a vehicle for the photographs. There is lots to read and absorb for each recipe, and the recipes themselves look extremely do-able in one's own humble kitchen. I bought a copy after glancing through it in the bookstore because I know this is definitely a book that I can use (and not just leave around looking pretty). I would say, though, that it functions really well on its own as a dessert cookbook - I'm less interested in the wine pairings - which would interest only those who are sticklers for such things!

Customer Review: great ideas

A marriage made in heaven: that of wine and desserts. What a wonderful idea!! The bringing together of two of the world's best offerings (wine and dessert) is a decadent inspiration that Ms Cech and Ms Schacht bring to perfect fruition with mouth watering recipes and superb wine suggestions to accompany them. The book is very friendly even for a novice like me in the art of wine appreciation, and it gives easy to follow recipes. I am up to the challenge of indulging my craving for sweets and wine! I plan to send a book to all my friends and family to create a network where all the recipes will be cooked or baked and later shared and combined with the wine suggestions to improve our palates, delight our spirits while giving us the perfect excuse to get together. I have tested a few of the recipes, and the results have not disappointed. I recommend this book greatly and think at the very least it makes a perfect gift.

Wines of Italy: Il Gusto Italiano del Vino

Published by under Wine Books

Italy claims more grape varieties than any other country: 350 have been codified and more than 1,000 others are being catalogued and studied. This extraordinary range of grapes and wine styles means that Italy's potential as a source for diverse and distinguished wines has barely been tapped and is little understood. Now Patricia Guy brings together the most comprehensive collection of current information about Italian wine today. In addition, Ms. Guy combines wine information with a host of complimentary food pairings and recipes for delicious meals with each wine. For those interested in touring Italian vineyards, "Wines of Italy" includes locations and maps that make planning a tour convenient.

With more than 100 full-color photographs, this indispensable guide is the first book designed to help everyone from consumers to sommeliers explore and understand the kaleidoscopic range of contemporary Italian grape varieties and the wines made from them. Salute!

Customer Review: First Steps Through A Growing Kaleidoscopic Of Italian Wines

Patricia Guy's "Wines of Italy" provides both an introduction to and reference work for the wines of Italy. Over 100 varieties are described in this book. They were selected on the basis of their use (on their own or as a blend) in Italy's most famous wines, their commercial success on the international market, and their palate-pleasing potential.

Over the last ten years, Italian wine producers have been tramping the fields and hills of their zones seeking out native wines, rediscovering lost pieces of their viticultural heritage, and using modern technology to fully express the potential of these grapes. The results of their work are arriving in wine shops around the world, offering wine lovers a luscious range of flavors and fragrances unavailable from any other country. "Wines of Italy" was created to help wine drinkers take their first steps through this growing kaleidoscopic world of Italian grape varieties.

The book begins with a synopsis of Italian viticultural history, which began before recorded time, and continues with a description of each wine growing region, its wine growing history including climate, and its gastronomical history. For each wine, Guy adds a descriptive passage from grape variety to wine and, since Italian wine is to be enjoyed with food, wine-gastronomy combinations.

The "Wines of Italy" is also filled with excellent photographs capturing the essence of each wine growing region. This book will be satisfying for any wine connoisseur, will serve as an excellent gift, and will show well on any cocktail table.

Customer Review: Much Needed Book

I have to disagree with the other reviewer who took issue with the emphasis on grapes over regions. The wine growing regions of Italy, let alone regions of most famous wine growing countries, have been covered in countless books. What has not been adequately covered are the less well know grapes used in these famous countries, that for whatever reasons are not available in the US or even known about. This book serves the vast appetite of more experienced wine lovers who know of the regions and now want to focus on the grapes that make unique wines. As a lover of Italian wines, I am dismayed by the small choice in US wine shops of wines from this country. A book that educates people about grapes over regions will cause people to demand wines of particular grapes currently not available in the US - thus increasing production and sales of fruit native to these countries that have been dismissed in lieu of more mainstream choices.

The Emperor of Wine: The Rise of Robert M. Parker, Jr., and the Reign of American Taste (P.S.)

Published by under Wine Books

This is the story of how an American lawyer raised on Coca-Cola caused a revolution in the way wines around the globe are made, sold, and talked about.

The world's most influential wine critic, Robert M. Parker, Jr., has dominated the international wine community for the last quarter century, embodying the triumph of American taste. Using Parker's story as a springboard, author Elin McCoy offers an authoritative and unparalleled insider's view of the eccentric personalities, bitter feuds, controversies, and secrets of the wine world. She explains how reputations are made and how and why critics agree and disagree, and she tracks the startling ways wines are judged, promoted, made, and sold -- while painting a fascinating portrait of a modern-day cultural colossus who revolutionized the way the world thinks about wine.

Customer Review: Modern Tastes Have Changed Because of This Man

Wine is enjoying a modern rebirth in the psyche of popular society. Yet for all the diversity, much of what we are drinking has been crafted to appeal to a "mass market modern taste".

Robert Parker is to be praised and blamed. One of the greatest and most flawed wine critics, he helped to introduce the 100-point rating system and bring wine to North Americans attention. Sadly, despite touting himself a wine critic for the people, most of the wines he raves about and recommends in his "Wine Advocate" remain out of reach for the majority of everyday wine consumers. To be the Emperor of Wine is a dubious position.

If you read this book and "The Judgment of Paris" by George Taber, you'll get a great and deep understanding of the modern wine industry. I also recommend "Noble Rot". The three most accessible and stimulating books on the social aspects of wine drinking and the politics behind the glamour of the grape.

Customer Review: A great read for those who love wine

I loved this book. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. If you are into wine and subscribe to Parker's website or newsletter this is a must read. A fasinating perspective on the world's most influencial wine critic.
